Best time to visit Nairobi National Park

The park is open every day, 06:00 to 18:00. Dry months make animals easier to see on short grass. Wet months are greener, with calves and Palearctic birds. The hour of the day matters more than the month.

Altitude is about 1,500 to 1,800 metres, so days are milder than Tsavo or the coast. Mornings can sit near 10 C. Midday is often 22 to 26 C. Carry a fleece at 06:00 even in February.

Dry season: June to October, and January to March

Less rain, thinner grass, animals on the dams. This is the usual advice for a first game drive. Lion, rhino, and giraffe photographs against gold grass and the skyline happen most often in these months. July to October is also Kenya's busiest safari season. Book the vehicle a few days ahead. Our hire note allows about 15 to 20 percent extra in peak weeks.

Wet season: April to May, and November to December

Short rains around November-December and long rains around April-May. The park stays open. Tracks on black-cotton soil get slippery. We still run vans and Landcruisers. Saloon self-drive is a bad idea after heavy rain. Wildebeest and zebra drop calves. Birders get Palearctic migrants from about November to April. Vegetation is thick, so cats take more patience.

Time of day

  • Best window. Predators still moving. Cool air. Fewer minibuses until about 08:30. This is the private morning half-day.
  • Animals rest in shade. Useful only if you are crossing the park toward Sheldrick at 11:00 or picnicking inside on a full day.
  • Second window. Softer light on dams. Hippos more active after 16:00. Last entry 17:15. Vehicles out by 18:00. Afternoon half-day pickup is 13:00 so you are in position by 15:30.
  • Night drive only, Landcruiser, two KWS rangers. Not a first safari. See night game drive.
